The American Philharmonic-Sonoma County will end its ninth
season with a concert designed to engage the young and old
alike. Music has long been used to tell stories and represent
real objects and places in the world. This concert will travel
through four centuries and three countries to reveal music's
hidden treasures. Tchaikovsky's sweeping Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy carries
the listener through the romance and misfortune of Shakespeare's
tragic couple. Zooming ahead into the future, Adams' Short
Ride in a Fast Machine captures the thrill of catapulting
inside a vehicle of infinite speed. Moving back two centuries,
the orchestra will support principal trumpeter Thomas Hyde
and trumpeter Daniel Norris in Albinoni's beautiful, lyrical,
and Baroque Concerto for Two Trumpets and Orchestra .
In the 1970s, Hovhaness took on a compositional challenge from
the New York Philharmonic to create a piece that incorporated
recorded sounds of humpback whales. Hovhaness's And God
Created Great Whales perfectly depicts the character of
the churning sea. Finally, Respighi's The Pines of Rome takes
us on a tour of Rome, bringing us down to the depths of the
catacombs before rising to the grandeur of the sunrise over
the Appian Way.
